Quarterly Market Reports
The Northern Housing Consortium quarterly housing market reports covering October to December 2008 are to be published at the end of March. The housing press has recently been focussed on the number of empty homes nationally and the latest edition of the market reports will analyse the current position in the three northern regions. Comparisons will also be made with the social housing waiting lists.
Preliminary analysis of the data shows that the three northern regions had between 3.8% and 4.2% of total stock empty at March 2008 (HSSA data). Comparing the number of empty homes with the number of households on waiting lists shows that at least 32% could be re-housed in the empty homes (
Yorkshire and Humberside).
Inside Housing reports that empty dwelling management orders (EDMOs) have only been used 17 times in the last three years. However, new
guidance from the Empty Homes Agency has made it clearer for local authorities to follow EDMOs and housing minister Margaret Beckett is encouraging local authorities to be more proactive in dealing with the empy homes in their districts.
