Best Practice in Delivering Extra Care
29th June 2007, Wakefield and District Housing, Castleford
This free event was a follow up to the most recent bidding round for the Department of Health Extra Care Housing Fund.
In 2007/08 £40m was available to develop extra care in England. Bidders were required to demonstrate evidence of need with reference to local strategies such as Supporting People and Regional Housing Strategies. A new and different requirement to earlier rounds was the requirement to 'Provide a significant and demonstrable health impact for older or other people with long term conditions.' This is in line with the Department's commitment to improve services for individuals with long term health conditions through a range of solutions such as telecare and the role of Community Matrons.
Schemes were also required to demonstrate how they would reduce unnecessary admissions to long term care and/or hospital. Encouragement was given for mixed tenure developments and partnerships with private sector providers.
The challenge is to continue the evolution of extra care housing and the range of housing care and support services it can offer, through robust multi-disciplinary partnerships.
Run in conjuntion with the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) and Housing Learning and Improvement Network (LIN), the event brought together local authorities and providers, creating networking opportunities for future partnerships, providing feedback and advice about the bidding process and examining the challenges for a future funding round.
Speakers at the event included:
Peter Fletcher, Peter Fletcher Associates Ltd
Denise Gillie, Learning and Service Improvement Manager - CSIP Networks
Rosemary Luckett, Gateshead Council
Mary Bryce Housing 21
