The impact of welfare reform on household incomes – coupled with wider economic downturn – means that now, more than ever, tackling financial inclusion is no longer an “add on” but an absolute business necessity for the housing sector. An increasing number of housing providers have increased their investment in supporting their tenants and communities in areas around budgeting, financial advice, education, and debt.

Welfare reform brings huge changes, including the rollout of universal credit and direct payments. Many tenants have experienced changes to their entitlements, and changes in the way they receive these and the way they are administered. Housing providers are experiencing and anticipating a huge impact on their business, the ongoing support they are providing to their tenants, and the impact on their financial health.

The Northern Housing Consortium, in conjunction with Quaker Social Action (QSA), will hold this training session for NHC members only. The training is part of the award winning Made of Money financial education project, which not only covers financial education basics of saving money, budgeting, debt and credit but also the emotional issues around money – dealing with stress, guilt, and communicating within the family about money, consumer pressures.

This practical and engaging training will provide frontline practitioners with the tools to facilitate hands-on sessions with your tenants, looking at:

  • The building blocks of good money management: budgeting, savings, loans, interest and debt
  • Increasing confidence and setting goals around finances, and breaking the cycle of financial exclusion
  • Empowering tenants to adopt a more sustainable approach to financial management and education
  • A look at how to communicate about money issues, and how to teach children about money and value

The training will cover a set of three workshops covering budgeting and saving, credit, and debt. The workshops can then be delivered in a group setting or the skills and resources used to support one-to-one work.

Who should attend?

This training is aimed at frontline practitioners working with tenants on low incomes in NHC member organisations. It is designed to help customers engage and deal with their financial situation, build confidence, and make them aware of what to do if there are debts or worries.

The training is suitable whether or not you have experience of financial advice.

This includes: tenancy management officers, financial inclusion teams, income officers, resident involvement teams, welfare reform officers, housing officers and other frontline officers engaging with tenants.

This is NOT training for delegates to become a money/debt advisor: it gives you tools and skills to start conversations about money, and enables your customers to be ready to seek debt or other specialist advice where needed.

Please note: this training has been specially designed as a one day facilitator training to deliver a condensed version of the full Made of Money series of workshops. If you have already been on the Made of Money two day facilitator training this course is not suitable. If you are interested in learning about the full set of Made of Money resources please contact mompartnership@qsa.org.uk directly.

Spaces are limited to 12 per training sessions.
