From April 2017, all employers with a pay bill in excess of £3 million per year will face an additional cost. This is the apprenticeship levy, which will add an additional 0.5% to existing payroll costs.

The government has a vision to increase both the quality and quantity of apprenticeships and to achieve 3 million apprenticeship starts by 2020. This ambitious new programme will be funded by the apprenticeship levy so it will be essential for housing providers to consider how they can benefit from this funding.

All housing associations will be impacted by the changes, primarily in relation to how learning and development programmes will operate and be structured to maximise entitlement to Apprenticeship funding. Smaller housing associations will be exempt from the Levy, although they will be able to use the funds collected by it. Larger associations will need to plan for significant additional employment costs which could be incurred.

While the levy is being introduced in April 2017, payments are set to start in May and it will be up to employers to notify HMRC each month as to whether they are eligible to pay.

The NHC in conjunction with New College Durham would like to invite NHC members to this free follow-up focused session to explore:

  • The latest updates round the Apprenticeship Levy.
  • How it will work.
  • Opportunities available for the sector to benefit from the Levy.
  • What the sector need to be doing to prepare for the Levy.
  • Other key considerations.
  • Updates from members around their L&D approaches.
  • Good practice, resources and expertise.
