Careers

We are recruiting across the North.

We welcome candidates from all identities, backgrounds, and ways of thinking at the NHC, and we will support you every step of the way.

Our aim is for the diversity of our people to reflect in our policy, engagement, and development work that make for a fairer society for all, celebrating our differences but working as one.

Our people are unique individuals with something in common – we all want to do the absolute best for our members. This underpins our culture and motivates us to continually grow. We hone our skills, make connections, empower our teams, and push to create change.

We operate an agile model focusing on being in the right place at the right time to deliver your work, for our members.

In real terms this means an expectation for you to travel to Sunderland for regular catch-ups with your team monthly, and, depending on your role, the ability to travel across the North for member engagement and our events programme a few times a year.

Our commercial arm, Consortium Procurement, has provided public sector bodies with a compliant and trusted procurement route for over 30 years. Consortium Procurement is not-for-profit, meaning every penny of surplus is reinvested into the NHC’s ambition – to represent our members’ interests and ensure they are heard at a regional and national government level. The team is growing fast! Find out more about working for Consortium Procurement, here – www.consortiumprocurement.org.uk/careers

Why work for us?

With a hybrid model at heart, we strive to ensure every conversation makes a difference. We care about each other, our members, and the individual impact of our work. We are open-minded, ask questions and actively listen to the response. And when we get together, we make sure it counts to share best practice, hear each other’s perspective, and always have a good laugh.

Sustainability matters to us. We aim to minimise our own environmental impact across the organisation through our cross-working sustainability group, actively working towards bronze level accreditation with Investors in the Environment. We have taken steps to reduce our journeys, embrace environmental best practice, and ensure our work contributes to the bigger picture, through our projects and solutions that chart the path to realise net zero ambitions.

Working with your team, line manager, and diary commitments, you will be able to work flexibly, to fit a long lunchtime walk in, a gym class, or start and finish early so you can pick the kids up from school. For us, it is the output that counts, not just spending hours at your desk. You will have 25 days annual leave (on top of bank holidays), rising a day a year up to 30 days, to take time out to rest and recharge. Job satisfaction is important, but more so are the little (and big) tokens of appreciation along the way!

Our pension scheme is above the minimum matched employer contributions, increasing with long service. We offer competitive salaries, reviewed regularly (to market roles and inflation), and we invest in bespoke training and development opportunities including professional subscriptions, job shadowing and professional coaching. We give our employees peace of mind with Death in Service Scheme, three times the salary. And if you would like to grow your family one day, we have enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption benefits.

To support you to be at your best, we offer a range of health and wellbeing support, and are delighted to have been awarded silver accreditation for wellbeing at work. We offer free counselling and advice through the Employer Assistance Programme and our mental health first aiders are on hand to offer support if you ever need it. We encourage you to take time out of your day to get some fresh air and do whatever you need to look after your physical and mental health.

Every employee is actively involved in shaping the future of the organisation, in the strategic direction of our long-term planning and ambition, and in setting shorter-term goals. We have three project working groups which we ask you to join one of, however, everyone is welcome to participate in all three, across sustainability, wellbeing, and equality, diversity, and inclusion, which encourage conversation within our team to benchmark good practice.
