The new lower benefit cap was announced by the government back in July 2015 and came into effect on 7th November 2016. Whereas the previous maximum amount of benefits a household could receive was £26,000 across the UK, the new lower cap is £20,000 for outside London and £23,000 in London. The hit to tenants’ pockets is estimated to be anything from £10 to more than £100 a week.

The new lower cap will have an impact across the northern regions, which were protected somewhat with the initial cap. There are concerns across the Northern Housing Consortium membership that the largest group facing a significant impact will be families with children. The Institute for Fiscal Studies states that under the old cap around 600 families were hit in the North East. This will increase to 4,000 families under the new cap.

The NHC would like to invite members to this free focused session facilitated by Ria Toutountzi, Practice Manager from Hull City Council, to:

  • look at different approaches adopted across the sector to mitigate the impact.
  • discuss key challenges and barriers.
  • hear how Local Authorities are changing their approach to DHP.
  • share good practice.
  • share success stories around employment and training for those impacted by the Benefit Cap.
