In the context of a growing population, a challenging housing market, rising homelessness and the vast pressures on local authorities to make the best use of housing stock in their area, empty homes are a wasted resource.

Across the North of England, there were around 225,000 empty homes in 2018, some of which had been empty for several months and even years. Long term empty homes can have adverse effects on neighbourhoods – issues around ASB, property values and reduction in confidence in the area. Owners lose out on rental income and have concerns around security, and there are significant effects on the local economy – including pressures placed on local public services and decreasing opportunities for employment.

Local authorities are key partners in trying to resolve the problems associated with these long-term empty properties, and much work is being done – there are some great examples of partnership working with Community-Led Housing organisations across the North. Dealing with empty properties can have social, regenerative, financial and strategic benefits.

Leeds City Council and Kingston-Upon-Hull City Council will discuss their different approaches to tackling empty homes. Representatives from the Community-Led Housing Sector, including LATCH from Leeds and Giroscope from Hull, will outline their partnership approach with local authorities.

The NHC would like to invite you and your colleagues to this FREE MEMBER ROUNDTABLE to discuss:

· The challenges local authorities and their partners face in tackling empty homes

· The Role of housing providers

· Solutions and opportunities

What can be achieved by working in partnership

This is a great opportunity to share good practice and network with colleagues in similar roles.
